Sir Peter was a senior civil servant who worked closely with three Prime Ministers – Harold Wilson, Edward Heath and Margaret Thatcher. For 11 years he was the permanent secretary of the first Department of Energy and then the DTI.

Sir Peter came to Nottingham High School on a scholarship in 1947. During his time at school he was a Sir Thomas White Scholar (1952); a Samuel Maples Scholar (1954) and received the Newham Prize in 1952 followed by Dr Turpin’s Prize for Latin Prose in 1954 and for Greek Prose in 1955.

Sir Peter was a Prefect, Captain of Mellers’ House, Head of Sixth Form and School Vice-Captain. He also edited the Nottinghamian, was Secretary of the Debating Society, a member of the Dramatic Society and Regimental Sergeant Major in the CCF.
